At no charge, one of our SLP's will give an in-service to your staff before a meal that will enable them to recognize many of the early signs of dysphagia. The SLP will also join your community during the meal to be available for questions by staff and immediately afterwards collaborate with the observers and nursing to discuss the appropriate next step for each resident who displayed these early signs.
The next step could range from a private meal with the SLP for those residents who displayed subtle symptoms all the way to the nurse obtaining orders for the SLP to evaluate. If the collaborative effort calls for a swallow study, an SLP certified in FEES (Fiber Optic Endoscopic Evaluation System) will be scheduled to visit and conduct swallow studies using a fiber-optic camera and a laptop that will display a video of the actual swallowing process. This state of the art technology eliminates the need for your resident to go to a hospital for a traditional Barium Swallow Study and also saves Medicare or the insurance company as much as $1000 per study.
